The Death Of The Classic Office Chair?

The office chair has, for more than 100 years, taken a very familiar look. Of all the furniture in the workplace or the home few have remain as unchanged as the humble office chair, usually sitting on a 5-star base with a wheel (or castor) on each point. In the last 20 years ergonomics have started to play a part in the design of office seating, but the changes have largely been very subtle and the look of an office chair still remains the same.
One company looking to shake things up a bit is Inter County, the largest office furniture supplier in England. Someone at ICOF seems to have taken great offence to the standard design of the office chair, as a whole raft of new office chairs with wierd and wacky designs have recently been added. Inter County are known for trying to keep ahead of the game, time will tell whether these latest offerings will enable them to do that.
Another product of note is the Stealth Shadow mesh chair, which is designed by the office furniture manufacturer AFI Group Ltd. These chairs feature a mesh back and seat which is perfect for the summer as it lets air in through the backrest and the underside and means no more sweaty backs in June and July (or so we all hope!). The pictures of the chairs on the website also feature a rather attractive model who unfortunately doesn’t come with the product. Joking aside these are probably the most exciting of all the new wave of office seating products now hitting the market and I know there is a lot of interest in them.
So does all this mean the death of the classic office chair? Not yet, but it does seem that finally people will get something a little more interesting to sit on after 100 years of waiting.
